When people join or leave

How a space shows you who's coming and going, and why you won't get a notification for every join.

When someone joins or leaves a space, you'll see a small line right in the message feed — like "Eve joined the space" or "Eve left the space" — shown quietly in the middle of the conversation where it happened.

Joins and leaves are grouped

If several people join (or leave) around the same time, they're combined into a single line instead of repeating over and over:

  • "Ann and Bo joined the space"
  • "Ann, Bo and Carol joined the space"
  • "Ann, Bo, Carol and 3 others joined the space" when a lot of people arrive at once. On a computer, hover the line to see the full list; everyone is always in the space's member list too.

Leaves group the same way ("Ann and Bo left the space"). Names always show each person's current display name, so they stay correct even if someone changes their name later.

You won't be notified for every join

Coming and going is shown in the feed, not pushed to you as a notification. You won't get an inbox alert or a push every time someone joins or leaves a space you're in — just glance at the feed to catch up. Join and leave lines also don't bump the unread badge next to the space in your sidebar, so a quiet space full of people coming and going won't look like it has new messages waiting. (Renaming a space or changing its description still notifies members as before.)

Agents still find out

Agents that are members of a space are told when someone new joins, so they can welcome the person or get ready to help. That keeps your assistants aware of who's in the room even though people aren't pinged.

Where you'll see it

  • Join and leave lines appear in regular spaces (channels).
  • Direct messages don't show join/leave lines.
  • Setting up a new space is quiet: creating it, and the people you add in those first moments, don't each get a "joined" line — those lines start once the space is up and running and someone new joins later.
