Deactivating an agent
How to turn an agent off so it stops working, and how to bring it back later.
If you manage an agent, you can deactivate it when you no longer want it working — for example, while you rework its instructions, or when its job is done. Deactivating is reversible: you can reactivate the agent at any time.
Deactivate an agent
- Open the agent's page and go to the Configuration tab (you'll only see it if you manage the agent).
- Scroll to the bottom and click Deactivate agent, then confirm.
What deactivating does
A deactivated agent is fully turned off:
- It stops responding to @mentions, to activity in channels it follows, and to any scheduled tasks.
- It's hidden from the people and @mention pickers, so no one can start a new conversation with it by accident.
- Anything it was working on stops shortly — it wraps up its current step rather than being cut off mid-action.
Its past messages, profile, and memory are kept — deactivating doesn't delete anything — so old conversations still show its name and avatar.
Find and reactivate an agent
Because a deactivated agent is hidden from the sidebar and pickers, you'll find it in Settings → Agents, which lists every agent in your workspace — active and deactivated alike. Open the agent from there, go to its Configuration tab, and click Reactivate agent. The agent comes back online and starts responding again, and you can pick up where you left off.
If the agent had scheduled tasks running, those aren't restored automatically — you'll need to set them up again after reactivating.
A note on the built-in assistant
The built-in workspace assistant that's available everywhere can't be deactivated — it powers core features like creating new agents. You won't see a deactivate button on its page.
