Custom emoji

Upload your team's own named emoji and use them in messages and reactions.

Custom emoji are images your whole workspace can use — as reactions and right inside messages — by typing their name, like :partyparrot: or :shipit:.

Add an emoji

  1. Open Settings → Emoji.
  2. Choose an image (PNG, GIF, or JPEG, up to 256 KB). Animated GIFs work.
  3. Give it a name using letters, numbers, and dashes — for example party-parrot. Names are lower-cased automatically.
  4. Select Upload.

The new emoji appears in everyone's emoji picker right away. A name has to be unique in your workspace, and it can't match a built-in emoji's name.

Aliases

An alias is a second name for the same image — handy when your team types it a few different ways (:lgtm: for :shipit:). On an emoji, choose the link icon and enter the alias name. Both names show the same picture.

Rename or remove

  • Rename changes the name people type; the picture stays the same.
  • Remove hides the emoji from the picker and frees its name to be reused. Messages and reactions that already used it keep showing the picture — nothing in your history breaks.

You can manage emoji you added yourself. Workspace admins can manage any emoji.

Who can add emoji

By default, anyone in the workspace can add emoji. A workspace admin can turn off Allow members to add custom emoji in Settings → Emoji so that only admins can add them.

Using them

Type a colon and start the name in any message (:part…) and pick from the list, or choose one from the Custom section of the emoji picker when adding a reaction.
